A Chip Off the Old Block

Written by Iris

Cast: Sunny Chan, Ron Ng, Myolie Wu, John Chiang, Gigi Wong, Mandy Wong, Shirley Yeung, Nancy Wong, Carlo Ng, Louis Yuen
Length: 19 episodes
Genre: Period Comedy
Producer: Poon Ka Tak
Scriptwriters: Chan Kam Ling, Cheung Keen Leung, Cheung Chung Tsai, Wong Bing Yee, and Fong Wai Yee

Synopsis:

While the saying “Like father, like son” holds true for most fathers and sons, it does not for Chor Fan (Sunny Chan) and Chor Tsz (Ron Ng). There is a world of difference between their personalities, manners of dealing with people and even goals in life. Fan is an out-and-out 60’s person, whereas Tsz believes he is well ahead of the 21st century. A thought-provoking time travel modern comedy, A Chip Off the Old Block reminds audience of the Chinese saying “Man is not born to greatness, he achieves it by his own efforts.”

Tsz is accidentally sent back from the 21st century to the 1960s. He befriends his father, who is a young man then. Fan puts Tsz up in his place, where Tsz comes to know the stingy Ko Shan Cheun (John Chiang), who runs a noodle stall, the shrewish landlady Tam Lan Ching (Gigi Wong), the argumentative Ching Lan Fun (Shirley Yeung), who later becomes his sweetheart, and Leung Pin Pin (Nancy Wu), who comes from a rich family. Tsz is always abusing and offending people. Other tenants, especially corrupt sergeant Ngau Ching Wing (Louis Yuen), hate him very much. Except for Fan, who always defends him and even later introduces him a job at a department store. In the 60’s now, Tsz however is as flamboyant as when he is in the 21st century. He finds Fan being too old-fashioned and kind-hearted. He almost makes other tenants homeless once, and he tries to destroy Fan and So Fung Ni’s (Myolie Wu) relationship. Later when he realizes his wrong doings, he is shocked to know that…

Yip Yeung (Benny Chan Ho Man) is very interested in the “Back Pushing Diagrams” (The Book of Destiny), which according to folk legend can foretell the future and help people to find luck and avoid tragedy. Yuen Hei (Steven Ma Chun Wai) capitalizes on this opportunity and tries to make money from him with a fake set of diagrams, but he is discovered by Lee Sing Tin, who has changed his name to Wan Chung Hok (Yuen Wah).

It turns out that he once presented the diagrams to the Emperor Zhao Kuangyin (Kwok Fung), helping him gain his throne. With a deep understanding in foretelling destinies, he accepts Yeung and Hei as his students and hopes to pass on his lifelong knowledge. Yeung later also becomes the student of another master Nam Fong Man (Lau Kong). Man uses Yeung in hopes of seizing back the imperial throne.

Au Revoir Shanghai

Written by krystal

Cast: Michael Miu, Bosco Wong, Shirley Yeung, Anne Heung, Power Chan, Ko Hung, Felix Lok, Derek Kwok
Length: 20 episodes
Genre: Pre-modern Action
Producer: Nelson Cheung Kin Man
Scriptwriters: Lau Chi Wah, Li Yee Wah, Leung Yun Dung

Synopsis:

Nip Jun (Michael Miu) was the right-hand man of prominent mafia leader Koo Cheung Seng (Ko Hung) in Old Shanghai. Under the influence of his wife (Sonija Kwok in a cameo), who had been married to Jun by Cheung Seng, Jun decided to retire from the fighting for a normal life with his wife and daughter. Just when the family was about to leave Shanghai, Jun’s wife died of a car accident. The tragedy struck Jun very hard, and although he remained in Shanghai, he successfully retired from a life of bloodshed to manage a restaurant with his daughter Man Wa (Shirley Yeung), his follower Kow Jai (Bosco Wong), along with several other servants and disciples.

After several years, Jun figured out by chance that his wife’s death had been caused by Koo Cheung Seng in an attempt to keep him from retirement. This discovery began a series of clashes between the two former partners, costing more lives and relationships along the way. At the end of the day, Jun killed Cheung Seng with a gunshot and finally managed to utterly leave bloodshed behind him.

In the meantime, Jun had met A Siu (Anne Heung), the widow of a man Jun had formerly killed. Jun treated Siu generously out of guilt, and romantic attractions ensued between the two as Siu became a helper in Jun’s business. When Siu realized that Jun was her husband’s killer, however, she found it impossible to accept him, no matter how many incidents and years elapsed.

The story is also complicated by the character of Kow Jai, an orphan mentored by Jun. Unlike Jun, Kow Jai had chosen to enter the service of Koo Cheung Seng and his son Sam (Power Chan). After seeing through the corruption and cruelty of his masters’ ways, Kow Jai had decided to work as a spy, secretly protecting Jun against Cheung Seng’s evil intentions. His undercover work cost him dearly, and he was nearly murdered by Cheung Seng. At the end, Kow Jai recovered from his wounds to find love with Man Wa, who had ultimately chosen him over Sam in their love triangle.
